Former GM Drops Major Intel On 49ers, Brock Purdy Contract Talks
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will become eligible for a contract extension next offseason, and former NFL general Mike Tannenbaum has an interesting take on the situation.

During a recent appearance on ESPN’s NFL Live, Tannenbaum shed some light on how negotiations between Purdy and the 49ers may play out.

Tannenbaum does not think the 49ers will offer Purdy top dollar. At least not right away.

It definitely makes sense, as San Francisco has Purdy under contract for two more years regardless of whether or not it extends him next spring.

Plus, as Tannenbaum notes, the Niners would also have the franchise tag in their back pocket in the event that they are unable to reach a long-term deal with Purdy before he hits free agency in 2026.

Additionally, Tannenbaum thinks that the 49ers may be able to sell Purdy on taking a pay cut in order to keep the band together.

Right now, San Francisco is locked in a bit of a tight situation with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is preparing to enter the final year of his deal and wants to get paid.

The problem for the Niners is that they have significant financial constraints and may not be able to afford Aiyuk as a result, especially if they end up maxing out Purdy.

Tannenbaum says that the 49ers may be able to talk Purdy into accepting less money in order to retain his top receiver in Aiyuk and potentially other pieces, as well.

While San Francisco doesn’t really have to worry about Purdy individually until next offseason, it may need to have this conversation with him now if it wants to extend Aiyuk before the 2024 campaign.

Purdy is coming off of a terrific season in which he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 113. He finished fourth in MVP voting and, most importantly, led the Niners all the way to the Super Bowl, where they ultimately lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
